CUPRESSUS arizonica 'Silver Smoke'

Family

Cupressaceae

Botanical Name

CUPRESSUS arizonica var. glabra 'Silver Smoke'

Plant Common Name

Arizona Cypress, Silver Smoke Arizona Cypress

General Description

The gray-green, silver-frosted foliage and relatively open habit of 'Silver Smoke' set it apart from other Arizona cypress cultivars. It was introduced by Duncan & Davies Nurseries of New Zealand.

This small, broadly conical tree has relatively sparse, fine-textured, silvery foliage, giving it a somewhat informal appearance. The undersides of the tiny, scale-like leaves are covered in white resin glands. Small, prickled, round cones add seasonal interest. The handsome, smooth, orange-red bark peels in vertical strips.

Plant this heat-tolerant conifer in full sun and well-drained soil. It thrives in low humidity and fails in hot, damp climates. Water it occasionally during prolonged dry spells. Siting in front of a dark background accentuates the silvery gray foliage. Use 'Silver Smoke' for screening or as a vertical accent in hot, dry regions where Colorado blue spruce isn't an option. It also makes an excellent lawn specimen or Christmas tree.
