Family

Aceraceae

Botanical Name

ACER rubrum 'Sun Valley'

Plant Common Name

Northern Red Maple, Red Maple

General Description

A selection of red maple, which is is native to eastern North American, 'Sun Valley' is a strong- growing deciduous tree notable for brilliant, long-lasting scarlet fall foliage. The canopy of 'Sun Valley' is oval and the leaves are green with three to five lobes and lovely red petioles (leaf stems). The leaves turn bright red in autumn and often deepen to dark red. In spring, the tree produces small, red flowers in abundant clusters. All flowers are male and thus result in no seed production. The blossoms are frequented by bees.

Like other red maples, 'Sun Valley' is adapted to a wide range of soil types, including wet sites. Acidic soil intensifies the red fall coloring. Red maple grows best in locations with full to part sun. This cultivar makes a great shade or street tree for urban settings as it is resistant to potato leafhoppers that cause leaves to prematurely brown. The red maple tree is known for having shallow and surface roots, so avoid planting it close to sidewalks.
