Water Wise is a term to describe plants that, once established, can conserve water by only requiring one deep watering per week.

Simple Suggestions to Help You Enhance Your Landscape and Conserve Water

Use proper soil preparation for your plant selection.
Use at least 2” of soil mulch to retain soil moisture.
Use soaker hoses or drip irrigation with timers. By installing a drip irrigation system, you'll save up to 60 percent of the water used by sprinklers.
Help your plants use less water: Cut back annuals and perennials during dry spells – they’ll bounce back when it rains again.
Group plants according to water requirements.
Move container plants to shady areas. Watering them over the root area of a tree puts excess water to good use.
Remove weeds. Weeds rob water and nutrients from valuable plants.
Fertilize appropriately: Don’t fertilize when you can’t water it in.

Build basins around shrubs and trees to limit runoff.
Collect water to keep your valuable plants alive: Catch rain water in rain barrels placed under your spouts.
Pruning keeps plants strong and less water dependent.
Set your mower blade higher than normal to keep your lawn alive during a drought.
Keep off the grass: Avoid walking on grass during periods of drought stress.
Manage yard pests responsibly by using pesticides wisely.
Recycle grass clippings, leaves and yard trimmings on your yard to provide soil nutrients and reduce waste disposal.
Try growing plants in your garden that have low water needs, like sedums.
